Change is the spice of life. It really becomes quite monotonous for us to lead a synchronized life with a rigid or packed schedule. A change helps to rejuvenate our inner self adding a new vigour to the same old life. With so many Indian cities to explore, there are so many choices for a summer visit. The best way to break the monotony of your daily life is through travel. People plan to go out and explore new locations, gain new insights and to re-energize themselves.

We have come up with the names of five pleasant and sun-soaked Indian cities, each with their own beauty and excitement. Such is the magic and charm of these frigid locations that no human being can avoid being pulled towards them.

1. Ladakh

The first of our Indian cities is also referred to as “the land of high passes”. It falls under the Eastern part of the Indian state of Jammu and Kashmir. It is scarcely populated and the culture is much influenced by Tibetan Buddhism owing to a good number of Tibetans settled there. The capital city of Ladakh is Leh. It offers nature in its purest form, less affected by technological and urban development. There are serene lakes surrounded by high mountain ranges along with Buddhist monasteries providing a spiritual touch to the place.

  • Things to Do

Major attractions are Drass War Memorial built to commemorate the sacrifices of Indian army in the Indo-Pak war; Nubra Valley, Gurudwara Pathar Sahib, Thiksey Monastery, Shanti Stupa and much more.

  • Climate During Summers

It is advisable to visit Leh-Ladakh between May and August when summer is at its peak. The snow-capped mountains are melting at this time of the year. Temperatures are at extremes even during the summers varying between 20 C to 30 C. This time of year is also marked with the celebration of a vibrant and colourful Hemis Festival. It is believed to be the birthday festivities of Lord Padmasambhava in a monastery where he used to meditate long ago. It forms one of the major attractions for tourists.

  • How to Reach

It is not considered very safe to reach there by road – they shut due to melting snow during the summer season. However, Leh-Srinagar route opens by late May or early June and Leh-Manali route remains closed in May and half of June most of the times. Flights are more feasible, from Delhi and Srinagar.

2. Manali

Manali forms a perfect summer holiday destination in Himachal Pradesh. It’s clear water streams, mesmerizing views and mountain adventures make it a place that can be visited any time of the year. It is situated at a height of more than 2000m above the sea level and has amazing view of forests, orchards, rivers and mountain ranges.

  • Things to Do

Visit religious places like the Tibetan Monasteries, Hidimba Temple, Manu and Vashist Temple. Adventure sports like paragliding, white river rafting, trekking and zorbing are major attractions. Solang Valley is a popular excursion from Manali. Also, Malana, a small town lying at its outskirts is apt for backpackers and explorers.

  • Climate During Summers

April to October is the right time to be here. It becomes chilly post October and by December, Manali receives it first snowfall. Rohtang pass and Vashist become unreachable during this time of the year.

  • How to Reach

Take a road trip from Delhi to Manali is 570 km. The journey between Delhi and Manali is also very enchanting where you’ll see Mandi, a beautiful place in the lap of nature and Manikaran Sahib, a famous Gurudwara known for its hot water springs. The airport at Bhuntar is 50 km from Manali and has flights from Delhi. Kullu which is 10 km from the airport.

3. Dharamsala

This beautiful place is located in Himachal Pradesh and is known as the home of the spiritual leader in exile, The Dalai Lama. It’s an ideal destination for those fond of nature and lush green areas.

  • Things to Do

Dal Lake, a beautiful lake set amidst lush green forests of Deodar; Kangra Fort, one of the oldest forts in India known for its architecture; Bhagsunag Falls, which also consists of Bhagsunag Temple of Lord Shiva and is a Hindu pilgrimage. There are a number of monasteries which are worth a visit if you are in Dharamsala. As it’s an appropriate place for vacations, there are innumerable hotels and resorts and a good choice for tourists.

  • Climate During Summers

Climate is moderate in May and June. Temperature fluctuates between 15 degrees and 27 degrees during the summer.

  • How to Reach

Daily flights are available from New Delhi landing at Gaggal Airport 15 km from Mcleodganj, an area visited by most tourists. Buses are available from Pathankot in Punjab.

4. Mussoorie

Tagged as the “Queen of Hills”, it is situated in Uttarakhand about 35 kms from Dehradun. It is known for its scenic beauty and also as an educational hub.

  • Things to Do

Kempty Falls, a beautiful location to take a dip while water literally falls from a height of 40 feet; The Mall, a place for buying souvenirs and window shopping; Gun Hill, known for ropeway ride; Lal Tibba, a high point to see the entire city; Cloud’s End, marks the end of Mussoorie and a lovely walking trek; Camel’s Back Road, a trekking spot shaped like camel’s hump.

  • Climate in Summers

May to July is the best time to go. If you want a glimpse of snow, opt to visit in the winter because the average temperature is around 37 degrees in the summer.

  • How to Reach

Flight from Delhi lands at Jolly Grant Airport, Dehradun. Rail and bus services are also available from Dehradun.

5. Mount Abu

The final spot on our list of Indian cities is perfect if you’re interested in experiencing areas of western India. Mount Abu in Rajasthan is a good option. It is the only hill station in the state and near Gujarat to provide respite from the Torrid Zone. It’s placed in the Aravalli mountain range, elevated at about 1220 m above sea level.

  • Things to Do

Visit the Delwara Temples known for their ornamental carvings; Sunset point; Wildlife Sanctuary; Nakki Lake; Guru Shikar and the highest point.

  • Climate in Summers

March to June is advisable, although it is a year-round destination. Winters here are not too cold as the temperature doesn’t usually fall beyond 12 degrees.

  • How to Reach

Flights are available from major cities to Maharana Pratap Airport, Udaipur and from there taxis or buses are available to Mt. Abu.
