How To Feel Good In A Long Distance Relationship

by Sophie Koger

For about two years now, I’ve been in a long distance relationship. My boyfriend lives 13,875 km away from me. Three continents. We see each other maybe once or twice a year. My feelings haven’t changed since and I couldn’t be more happy about this. Honestly it isn’t always easy but I found a way to get through this difficult time.

In the beginning I thought “why do I put myself in a difficult position like this?” But then I realized I didn’t put myself there, I just fell in love and that’s the most natural thing in life.  While we are separated I feel free but still loved.

I’m happy that I can be myself, care about myself and concentrate just on me. Of course I miss him, no question, but you have to make the best out of it. I would say that nobody in a relationship has as much time for their friends than someone who is in a long distance relationship.

One day we have to think about our future but hey, I am in my mid twenties and there is no reason to face all negative points about a long distance relationship. I want to live in the moment and in the end, life happens anyway.

I know everyone says it but it is true, the most important thing is TRUSTING each other!

When we do get to see each other, we make sure to travel around and explore new places and countries and remind ourselves that we can enjoy spending every second of being reunited.

This means we can create good memories for the next few months and as soon as I get upset about being separated, I can think about the adventures we have experienced together.

In the beginning, we tried to Skype every day but we quickly realised that this isn’t the right way to handle the situation. We spent way too much time in front of the computer.

We lost too much time for ourselves, which we could have used for more important things. It was not like it should be, so we found another way. Now we are facetiming every second week, of course we are texting as often as we can but the time difference makes it quite difficult. But we found our times where it is perfect for us to communicate. In my opinion every couple should find their own way because there is no right or false.

The best thing to keep your mind straight is keeping yourself busy. You can’t then think too much about your partner and you know that being upset won’t change the situation. The sadness comes and goes but as soon as I got used to it, it wasn’t as bad anymore. I am doing a lot of sport, because it keeps me busy and healthy and at least I am doing something good for my body. I am also learning a third language.

Even when I am going out with my friends and their partners, I am always happy for them. It’s important that you do something for yourself. It might be sport like I am doing, or cooking, learning some new skills or being creative. Just be yourself, and always make yourself better every day. When you love yourself and you are happy with yourself you will see a long distance relationship isn’t hard.
