Food For Your Face: How To Choose The Best Face Mask For Your Skin Type

by Emily Green

The way I see it, face masks are like ice cream; we can never choose just one kind. Face masks are also treats for your skin, like ice cream is a treat for your taste buds. The similarities end there. See, face masks are healthy, detoxifying and nourishing ?food? for your face. And ice cream? Well, let?s just say it doesn?t have quite the same effect.

Face masks are truly wonderful tools to help supplement your daily skincare routine. They can be used alongside inositol powder to help give your glowing, healthy skin. They help target your specific needs and concerns. However, the most wonderful thing about face masks is also the most dangerous: you can never have too many. There are a hundred different masks for a hundred different needs and honestly, it’s redundant to buy a face mask just for the sake of buying it, or for the almighty and powerful hype. Because not every face mask is designed to help your skin, it can become very easy to go a bit crazy and one day find yourself staring at a shelf entirely filled with face masks. I might be speaking from experience here.

Face masks fall into several different categories: calming, moisturising, detoxifying, acne fighting, brightening and anti-ageing. It?s safe to say that having a mask in each category, or several masks that fall under multiple categories, is a reasonable thing to do. However, it?s important to do some research and find the best mask for your skin type and needs. If you have sensitive, dry or acne prone skin, you need to take these factors into consideration when choosing a mask.

Multifunctional masks are great – healing and combatting various problem areas at once is both time-efficient and smart. If you?re tight on cash, or just don?t want the clutter of so many products, it?s easy to choose just a couple of masks that have several benefits.

Advanced Hydration Mask ? Josh Rosebrook

The Advanced Hydration Mask will nourish even the driest of faces with its super hydrating ingredients: aloe vera (regenerates skin), mango seed butter (moisturises and tightens) and blue tansy oil (calms irritation). This mask is like a cool drink of water for parched and sensitive skin. It even looks like water with its rich blue colour from the tansy oil! Packed with rich plant oils and botanicals, it helps replenish and retain skin cell hydration. The mask helps to plump, lock in moisture, condition and improve skin circulation. These will ultimately protect and support healthy skin function and slows signs of ageing.

Clearing Mask – Indie Lee

The Clearing Mask helps purify clogged pores and congested skin with its gentle, yet effective, detoxifying formula. The mask leaves skin feeling tightened and firm, but still nourished. This is due to in part to the hyaluronic acid, softening the face and enhancing circulation.

This mask is ideal for congested and acne-prone skin. The clay and fruit acid formula helps to eliminate dead skin cells and remove toxins from pores, reducing inflammation and redness, while healing acne scarring. Speaking of acne scarring, if you find that using a mask like this hasn’t made much of a difference to your skin or any other product, doing some research into aesthetic procedures may give you the answer to finally getting rid of/fading the scarring. You can also use the mask as a spot treatment for those stubborn breakouts. The mask is both detoxifying and hydrating, so it won?t dry out your skin if you leave it on for several hours, or even overnight.

Clarifying Mask – Tata Harper

This is a great mask for almost any skin imperfection. It?s great at helping your skin get back to looking healthy, balanced and clear. The mask has an enzymatic peel effect that helps reduce the appearance of breakouts, redness, and excess oil without drying or irritating the skin.

The mask contains chlorella, which nourishes and hydrates the skin. It’s also a vibrant green colour! When washing off the mask, the warm water activates the effect of quartz sand crystals in the mask. This in turn exfoliates and softens your skin as you gently massage the mask off of your face. This is an amazing added bonus that I really love; it leaves the skin feeling smooth and soft, as well as invigorated.

3 Minute Flash Mask – Ursa Major

The Flash Mask is a gentle but effective enzyme face treatment that quickly exfoliates dead skin built up on the surface of your face. It also helps to accelerate skin cell turnover, enhancing the appearance of skin tone, brightness, and firmness. This mask is very gentle. It also gives the same amazing effects as an intense scrub or light chemical peel without the irritation. The gel-like texture and amazing tropical fruit smell only help to elevate the amazing benefits of this mask.

This mask has really helped to brighten my skin and gives me a wonderful glow, thanks to brightening ingredients like pineapple and hibiscus. Other natural ingredients that work wonders are pomegranate enzymes that help remove dull, dead skin cells, leaving behind smoother and brighter skin. It?s gentle enough for all skin types. Even those with sensitive skin that might be a bit wary of an enzymatic mask should give this one a try.
