Halloween Goodies Guide: Guilt Free Treats

by Heather Young

Trick or treat! It’s that time of year again where all that is good in life comes pouring in by the pounds in the form of little yummy sugary treats, aiming to bring a smile to your face and potential inches to your waistline.

That’s right, I’m talking candy and lots of it. I don’t have a huge sweet tooth but I have a radar that sends my eyes roaming every time chocolate enters my vicinity. I like to think of it as a little slice of heaven, there to make my taste buds (and day) all the better.

Although my candy loving self may enjoy this time of year you can bet my health conscious, gym loving self is laying on the guilt trip. So to make you (and me) feel like we aren’t betraying that healthy side of us, here are a few treats that won’t have you feeling horrible later.

Fun Size Was Made For A Reason

Here lies some marketing genius who created portion control for those of us with no control. I guess it’s a good thing that most Halloween goodies given out are fun size rather than actual size. That is of course, unless you are that really cool house that happens to give out full size chocolate bars, in which case you were my favourite growing up.

These little treats are the perfect size to satisfy your cravings without going overboard. You just have to make sure you don’t go back for thirds or fourths. I know, I know. It’s difficult. This year, try eating a fun size 3 Musketeers (if you’re in the USA) because it only has 24 calories and 0.5 grams of saturated fat, making it by far the best choice among the many mini chocolate bars.

Not feeling like a chocolate bar? You can always go for my favourite… fun size Peanut M&Ms. Combining crunchy, sweet and salty it will for sure hit the spot. Plus the peanuts provide some protein and fibre, and don’t worry… they’re only 90 calories with 5 grams of fat and 9 grams of sugar.

Grab A Sucker

Suckers typically take a good amount of time to eat. Because it takes you a while to finish a sucker, your mind is tricked into being satisfied longer without wanting another piece right after. The best choice for the season is given to the Dum Dum. Giving us a variety of flavours from bubble gum to mystery, these little guys are only 20 calories and have 0 grams of fat.

Not feeling like a Dum Dum? Tootsie Pops, One Charm Blow Pops, and my favourite Caramel Apple Pops all come in at 60 calories. Except for Caramel Apple Pops that have 0.5 grams of fat, all the rest have 0 grams of fat.

Candy Covered In Chocolate

I normally like my chocolate plain with nothing on the inside, except for as I mentioned before my favourite Peanut M&Ms. I know there are loads of people that love chocolate covered treats so here are some of your best choices.

Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups. Packing in the sweet and salty, they are an all-time favourite for most. That being said they are 105 calories, 6.5 grams of fat and 2 grams of saturated fat.

If chocolate cups filled with peanut butter doesn’t hit the spot, try a York Peppermint Patty. These mint filled treats give you great breath while delighting your sweet tooth. Plus they’re only 165 calories with 3 grams of fat.

A Love For The Classics

Now, who doesn’t love some classic sweets? We all have memories attached to specific ones, so when we eat them we’re also taking a trip down memory lane. The ever-popular 90s dance and delicious candy the Tootsie Roll fixes your chocolatey and chewy cravings. At 50 calories, these are great. Just be careful because it’s very easy to have a handful rather than just one.

Smarties (although made pretty much completely out of sugar) aren’t a bad choice. They are only 25 calories with 0 grams of fat per roll… plus you feel like you’re getting way more since there are 20 pieces in each roll. Winning!

Note: This amazing article was written by one of our US writers, so you guys will probably be very familiar with all of these yummy treats already. For everyone else… get started on those M&M’s and Smarties! Happy Halloween.
