Holiday Destinations You Never Thought Of For Spring

by Auriel Simmonds

There are plenty of places in the world that are the go-to destinations for a relaxing springtime holiday. You can see the beautifully bright field of daffodils, set against a blue and cloudless backdrop. But you might find that you want to inject some more adventure into your spring holiday. You might want to experience what a place offers during the season in a place that doesn’t top the popular lists.

The beauty of spring can be found in so many places in the world that you wouldn’t usually consider because they’re either reserved for the heat of the summer or for the Christmassy lights of the winter. But, many of these places offer an experience during the springtime that is unique and wonderful. So, here are three destinations you should definitely consider when thinking about where to book your spring holiday!

Barcelona

Barcelona…the destination of your summer dreams. The sun that beats down on the pavements, the cocktails and the sandy beaches. Sounds like heaven, right? While it is a wonderful summer destination, we shouldn’t neglect the Barcelona of spring. There is so much to do. And if you are someone like me who can suffer in hotter climates- I sometimes feel like I could actually be melting- then spring time is your best friend! It will still be warm, but you won’t endure the constant need to reapply your sunscreen. Or the fear that you won’t be able to find shade before you turn into a tomato.

Known for its vibrant culture, Barcelona offers ‘The Night of the Museums’ during spring. Essentially, it’s a free, late night viewing of exhibitions in over sixty museums for locals and visitors! This is the perfect opportunity to discover the history that is on display in Barcelona while on your trip! This celebration of culture is also seen in the ‘DA Film Festival Barcelona’. At this festival, they screen an international panorama of contemporary cinema. It is the perfect event to attend if you love film! The passion for film and culture thrives in Barcelona during the spring and this makes it the best place to visit to experience new and unique things.

New York?City

New York City. There are so many films that have made me fall in love with the idea of New York. The dedication to festive decoration at Christmas, the bright lights of Broadway, the hustle and bustle of Times Square. But I’ve only recently come to the realisation that, while Elf made me dream and yearn for a trip to New York City at Christmas, it’s an amazing place during spring.

The Christmas obsessed New York City suffers a period of winter blues in January due to the comedown from the most wonderful time of the year, and?that’s?what?makes?spring?so?special. People have shed their winter clothing and are starting to feel less glum, looking forward to the blue skies of spring. The cherry blossom trees start to colour the landscape. The parks – most importantly, Central Park- are blooming with beautiful colours and are the perfect places for picnics, taking in the beauty that surrounds you.

And of course, like Barcelona, the celebration of culture is in full swing with events like the Tribeca Film Festival. If you love films, there are so many places in New York City that have been used as locations in popular movies! Spring is the perfect time to visit these places since the cooler-than-summer, but warmer-than-winter weather makes a perfect atmosphere for wandering!

Rome

Believe it or not, but there is more to Italy than pizza! And we all know Rome as the destination for a sunny getaway that offers, in abundance, culture and delicious food. But, when summer comes to an end, Rome does not cease to exist. And during spring, it’s one of the best places to visit for a fun time! Similarly to Barcelona in spring, the scorching summer temperatures are enough to put pale people off from ever visiting but in spring, you get the best of both worlds. The temperatures are by no means low, but they’re not so hot that you’ll be constantly sweating.

Rome is known for its several popular tourist attractions including the Colosseum, the Trevi Fountain and the Sistine Chapel, to name a few! And during summer, these places are thronged with tourists desperate to take pictures to show to their friends and family back home. But with spring comes less crowds and more opportunity to relax and enjoy the attractions you visit! During the springtime, Rome is essentially as beautiful in the spring as it is in the summer but with less crowds and potentially more opportunity to relax. There you have it! The three destinations you should consider for your springtime holiday that you probably never even thought about. The winter blues will fade from your memory and the warmer temperatures are sure to make your holiday one to remember! And hopefully, you can have new experiences by going somewhere during spring that you would usually think of as just a summer or winter destination.
