Just Let Go: How Letting Go Of Expectations Will Improve Your Life

by Taylor Team

I’m sure we’ve all heard the quote, “expectation is the root of all heartache.” I’m here to reiterate how true that is – whether it’s in your relationships, career path, fitness journey, or any other aspect of your life. By expecting things to go a certain way, we are subconsciously setting ourselves up for failure. It’s more common for a reality to not be like the picture you painted in your mind because life doesn’t always go the way we want it to. But, do you find yourself feeling disappointed because you’d wanted one thing to happen, and it didn’t? I struggle with this too. As much as you want to have no expectations at all, it can be a really challenging thing to let go of.

Having expectations is normal. We may be expecting a raise, a phone call from a guy, or be expecting to lose five pounds this month. It is certainly not bad to want these things and strive for them – however, it becomes a problem when you start expecting it. Your brain will think of it as if this event has already happened, and you may feel less inclined to work diligently to make this a reality.

That’s why it’s important to just let go of these expectations. Things in life just work out, and being free of these thoughts will make you happier and more at ease. Here are some of my tips on how to change your thinking to help you let go of unrealistic expectations:

Whatever Happens Is Meant To Happen

I know, this is kind of cliché… but that expectation you had? It just was not the right thing to happen. At least not right now. There is always the possibility that whatever you want will come back around at a later time in life when you are more prepared and willing to accept it. If not? Something better will come along. I promise.

Closed Doors Mean Open Doors Elsewhere

Having something negative or disheartening happen to you just means there is something better around the corner. Stay positive, and venture into something new. Whether you look to make new friends at work or try out a new fitness class, you never know what can happen when you step out of the comfort zone you have built for yourself. That “closed door” could be the best thing that ever happened to you.

Your Thoughts Shape Your Reality

The universe has a funny way of bringing you whatever it is you think about most. Staying positive, no matter what hardship you’re facing, will bring you good things in life. The picture in your head and the reality could be a different story, but I guarantee that you will not be disappointed with the results. I heard a quote recently that said, “Stop complaining for 24 hours and watch your life change.” I challenge you to sincerely try that for a day. Turn every idea you have into a positive one, and turn every expectation into a happy thought about what you are already grateful for.

It’s Okay To Be Upset

Expectations that do not come true are disappointing and it’s natural to get upset when this is the case. But, grieving only helps for so long. Eat that ice cream, meditate a while and then start thinking about all of the great things in your life. Remember to stay enlightened, smile and find that new happiness. It’s right around the corner. I promise.

I’m going to leave you with my favourite quote at the moment. “Don’t grieve. Anything you lose comes around in another form.” Remember this whenever you are feeling sad, because it won’t be long before the next great thing presents itself to you. You are exactly where you are meant to be and you are doing great.
