7 Self-Care DIY Ideas

We’re all about self-care, self-love and taking time to look after yourself. Self-Care Sunday is usually our day once a week where we take care of ourselves and indulge in relaxation and bliss before the week begin. We put together a list for you to do at home when you need a little relaxation and time for self-care. The best way to better your mental health and physical body is to implement tiny self-care habits whenever you possibly can. To often try and create a little bit of love and attention for your own body, mind, and soul.

1. Treat yourself to a spa day at home for the ultimate self-care session

This is a lot less expensive than going to a salon or an actual spa, and it’s even cosier because you’re in the comfort of your own home. Invite some friends over for manicures, pedicures and face masks. Set the relaxing mood and tone by lighting some of your favourite candles and you could even put on some gentle, relaxing music to set the scene.

2. Have a movie marathon and watch your favourite feel-good films

A Cinderella Story anyone? My list includes a lot of romantic comedies and teen movies that make me smile and always put me in a great mood. Make a cup of tea, get wrapped up in your favourite cosy blanket, put on a pair of fuzzy socks and just take some time to switch off and watch something you haven’t seen in a while. “Nourishing yourself in a way that helps your blossom in the direction you want to go is attainable, and you are worth the effort.” – Deborah Day

3. Bake some of your favourite comfort treats

I’ve had a lot of fun making new recipes recently. I’ve enjoyed spending a couple of hours a week finding new baking recipes and testing them out. Push yourself out of your comfort zone and see what you come up with – experiment with vegan cupcakes or avocado brownies if you’re feeling really adventurous. You might surprise yourself!

4. Make your own DIY bath bombs and put them to use!

There are many simple recipes for creating your own bath bombs and the best part about it is that many of the ingredients are things you probably already have in your kitchen cabinets. You can incorporate some of your favourite calming scents or essential oils. My personal choice is lavender for relaxation and serenity, peppermint when it gets to the colder months (it reminds me of Christmas time!) and grapefruit for a nice citrus bath bomb. It smells heavenly!

5. Grab a novel or magazine and escape

Personally, I grab the newest copies of Glamour and Cosmopolitan the first day they get released each month. My evening is then spent reading the articles, making a note of what I want to research online, and looking at what items I’m interested in buying. Aside from the fact that it’s fun to read, this is a great alternative to scrolling through articles online. You’re actually picking up a book or magazine and feeling the physical pages of what you’re reading.

6. Colour, paint, or sketch to your hearts content!

I can’t draw and being an artist is absolutely not my strong point but that doesn’t matter. For me, I find it therapeutic and relaxing to practise calligraphy in sketchbooks. Doodles, drawings and sketches are something I enjoy so much – it doesn’t matter if you’re good or bad. Find a soothing creative outlet and see what happens when you try something new.

7. Do some exercise for beginners

Go to YouTube and look up yoga, pilates, or barre tutorials for beginners. Spend time following along for some easy, rejuvenating exercises. There are plenty of beginner or intermediate videos online that you can choose from and follow along, without having to leave the comfort of your own home. Create some space in your bedroom or living room and you’ve got your own mini gym right there.

Remember how important it is to give yourself time to reset each week. It will not only help make you feel more complete and calm during the week, but it will make you happier overall by having devoted time to loving and caring for yourself. Sleep in a little later on Saturdays, have that glass of red wine and indulge in things you love and enjoy doing.
