Releasing Your Inner Confidence: You Are Beautiful

by Li Yakira Cohen

Every girl and woman knows how hard it is to be confident in today’s society. Every day, we have to face the images and statements portraying what “beautiful” is supposed to look like. Society’s mentality is that the perfect woman is supposed to be thin and toned with flowing hair and flawless skin, but let’s be real – that picture is just too perfect to actually exist. It’s not always easily to ooze confidence.

We were not meant to fit this ideal image; if we were, we would all be born to fit in. Here’s the thing. Even models have their flaws; they just have this handy dandy tool called Photoshop to cover them all up.

Today is the day

Well, today is the day that this everyday comparison needs to stop. No, I’m not talking about society changing its mentality in one day; I’m talking about You, the wonderful person reading this, to stop comparing yourself to what you see.

So you weigh more than that lady sitting next to you? If the only thing that matters is the number, I would rather have £200 than £150.

So your hair doesn’t flow in the wind when you walk? Well you’d look pretty damn stupid if you had a fan hooked to your shoulder.

You have freckles? They’re not spotty flaws, they’re little marks of individuality that make you who you are.

You are beautiful because you are unique and the more you believe it the more it will shine through. As long as you stick to your values and do the things that make you truly happy, then you are living life as you should.

Beauty isn’t physical

The thing that makes the prettiest people shine is the fact that they flaunt the skin they’re in. You don’t see them hiding behind their clothing or shrinking themselves to blend in. They know they were born to stand out, and they make sure everyone else knows it too. That, my friends, is confidence.

Beauty is not physical; it’s strictly mental. If you want others to realise how wonderful you are you have to believe in it first. You are your own worst critic, but you are also your own best friend. From now on, you need to wake up in the morning, look in the mirror and tell yourself 5 things that you love about yourself. Each day, 4 of those things need to be different, but they all need to conclude with the same last affirmation: I am beautiful.

… because you are. You have SO much potential. Actually, it’s pretty crazy how much potential you really have. You can change a life. You can change a community. Even the world. And it all starts with changing the way you look at yourself.

All it takes is confidence, and no, that does not make you cocky. Cocky is saying you’re better than someone else, but confidence is saying that the only person you’re better than is the person you were yesterday.

“You are altogether beautiful my darling; there is no flaw in you.”

I am not a religious person by any means, but this is one of the most truthful lines I have ever read. You were born to stand out, you were born to challenge yourself, you were born to recognise that the only true flaw is when you don’t stay true to who you are.

The most beautiful trait is confidence, and that is what we need to teach to ourselves, our loved ones, and the people we come across. Self-love is one of the most important things we can learn, and unfortunately, it’s not something mandated in school systems or taught by the media. You are your best teacher and the day you can walk out of the door and truly know how beautiful you are is going to be one of the greatest days of your life.

You are lovely.

You’re flawless.

You are bold.

You are beautiful.

This is your time to shine.
