Why Inconsistency Is Essential

Why Inconsistency Is Essential

Tomorrow is never what you think it will be. Your plans will change, your circumstances will be different and your emotions will go up and down unexpectedly. Inconsistency is a part of life and that’s something that I’m still learning to accept. I am a creature of habit, a lover of consistency. Structure is important to me and spontaneity doesn’t always come naturally, but I’m starting to realise that inconsistency is necessary.

Why do I love structure? I love structure because it practically eliminates that possibility of uncertainty. I can rehearse what I’m going to do and say ahead of time because I already have an outline in place. Without that daily outline, I can quickly become frazzled. Not having that step-by-step guide to life is one of the worst feelings in the world. I hate not knowing what I”m doing, or even worse, knowing that I could potentially be doing something wrong. My goal is to be constantly in control of everything, which is 100% impossible. Great.

Shout-out to all of the perfectionists out there who can relate. Perfection doesn’t exist, but we do everything we can to create it. Our desire is to be the embodiment of flawlessness. Having this unachievable goal is going to ruin us. If we are chasing something as impossible as perfection, we will never accomplish anything. Not really. You have to be willing to fail in order to achieve something truly incredible.

The only way to get to where we want to go is to accept inconsistency and chaos. We have to be able to embrace it to be able to move forward. If you lived a life of sameness, there would be no development. Think about who you were five years ago. Fourteen-year-old me was a mess. If I lived a life of consistency all the time, I would still be that person. I would still be a mess. Thanks to inconsistency, I grew up. I’ve learned all about patience and bravery, loyalty and love. There are countless lessons to be learned in this life, and I have a feeling that almost all of them can be learned through times of confusion and uncertainty.

Inconsistency is essential. I wish it wasn’t, but it is. Failure can be painful and change can be scary, but your strength will be revealed through those trials. You will most likely never feel fully ready for adversity of any kind, but you will definitely face it. Don’t shy away from it. Invite it in. See inconsistency as a way of life. Let it produce vulnerability and patience instead of selfishness and fear. Crazy things do happen and sometimes life can be hard to handle but everything that you’re going through will be worth it. Remember that and you can get through anything.
