Why The Bronde Look Is Perfect For Autumn

by Ceylan Kumbarji

The bronde craze was everywhere during the summer. It’s a beautiful mix of brown and blonde, combining caramel tones with darker chocolate shades. Blake Lively took to Instagram a few months ago to share the picture of her new bronde hair and since then, all of our favourite celebrities from Jessica Alba to Suki Waterhouse have been our hair-spiration. But, now we’re in autumn is the bronde look still a yes? We went to Lisa Hauck in Primrose Hill, where she recreated the look for us and explained why bronde is perfect for this season.

Bronde Hair In Autumn

If you have dark hair and want to transition to a lighter look, bronde is ideal. When you have a dark base, the lighter tones subtly lighten the hair naturally, so you should stay within your natural tones. Lisa says “that’s why bronde is great for autumn, because you won’t have roots. It grows out softly and so it’s relatively low maintenance and flatters your skin tone. In winter, we all get paler so if you have really light hair and your skin goes really light too, you just look beige. I think mostly it’s a very good way for people with darker hair colour to bring a bit of movement to the hair.”

Advice Before You Go Bronde

With any colour you should make sure the hair is in good condition before you begin, otherwise, the colour won’t stay in your hair as long. Using a proper mask or treatment beforehand helps to strengthen your hair. Lisa says “we use mainly Schwarzkopf, particularly Fibreplex which is high in Keratin. We add this to the colour to reduce hair breakage so it’s great for filling those gaps in your hair. I find using sulphate free shampoo’s are less damaging too.”

Inspiration And The Two Groups Of Bronde

Jessica Alba, Jennifer Aniston, Lily James, Cara Delevingne, Blake Lively and Alexa Chung are all people to look to for inspiration. Lisa says “Alexa Chung is known for using the balayage (a French word that means to sweep or paint) and ombre effect, with different shades and it always looks great. She’s experimented with both dark/light hair and you almost have two groups of bronde. One which is slightly more blonde and one that includes more browns.”

With over 14 years of experience in hair, Lisa has seen many trends come and go but she thinks bronde is going to be an ongoing trend for years to come. “Because you don’t get roots, you just have to maintain it when you feel like the colour starts looking a bit dull. It’s much easier to look after.”

The Difference Between Regular Highlights And Going Bronde

Hair stylists use different techniques now, it’s not all just rigid foils. “Different shades are really painted in and with the balayage effect being more popular recently, you actually have less colour being used and it’s better for your hair. Plus, you don’t have that huge contrast. You don’t have loads of highlights that are all different shades; instead, you’re staying within those medium tones and keeping some of your own shades there too.” Ultimately your hair will look healthier and more natural.

Lisa’s 5 Top Tips

  • Use a high lift tint – no bleach. This will create more caramel tones.
  • Use some dark tones too – imagine the kind of look you’d achieve if you were at the beach for three months.
  • Wait 24 hours before your next wash so the hair can regenerate.
  • Use Instagram and YouTube for inspiration and to find new trends.
  • Use treatments and masks often to keep your hair strong and healthy.
