Winter: Why We’re Sad To Say Goodbye

by Shannen Newman

The month of December arrives and the nights out become nights in. I call it granny season. As we come to our last winter month, let’s look back on why we love winter so much. At least before it changes to spring and we start to eagerly await summer.

Saying goodbye is hard!

We’re sad to leave winter behind because we won’t have as much time to read our books or watch our favourite TV shows. And most importantly, spend the majority of our time wrapped up in a blanket. While spring brings its own joys, winter is the season where we can enjoy long walks, warm jumpers, New Years resolutions and re-connecting. Re-connecting is one of our favourite parts.

Even if you haven’t spoken to an old friend for months, you can always depend on a Christmas card from them and the promise of seeing each other more in the New Year. You make the effort to go and see your grandparents or distant cousins, and leave feeling warm and appreciative. You make phone calls that you should have made a long time ago. The pace of life slows down, giving you the opportunity to be present in the moment.

Reuniting with me time!

In London, it’s still freezing and for us this feels more like winter than it did when we were putting out our Christmas trees and wrapping presents. The comfort of the warmth overrides the joys of drinking and living care-free. You start to prioritise nights in with your family and loved ones and it becomes a bonding experience. The excitement of getting home after a long day, putting on your woolly onesie and making yourself a hot coco is like heaven. You always tend to become lazier in the winter time and my routine on the weekends turns into movie days. The funny thing is I never get bored. During the winter, I reunite with me time.

Relationships strengthen!

Assumptions are made that if you’re not in a relationship during the winter season you must be lonely. I disagree. Being independent doesn’t mean you’re alone. The cold months are best for bonding, whether it’s time with your friends or board game nights with your family. Alternatively, spending time with your partner on cold nights gives you the opportunity to branch out and do things you usually wouldn’t do. Winter Wonderland, iceskating and cooking indoors? Yes please. If you’re not out, you’re probably indoors with your loved one. You can order a pizza and catch up with Saturday night television (red wine by the fireplace is always a good idea!)

However you’re spending your last month of winter, make sure to remember some of your favourite things about the season as you prepare for warmer and shorter days. Drink as much tea as you want and go for that last walk in your fluffy coat.
